External Coil Reactor: Half-Pipe Heating in a Lighter, Stronger Vessel
The external coil reactor is a stainless steel reactor whose heating surface is a spiral half-pipe jacket welded onto the outside of the shell. It heats rapidly, tolerates high temperature, resists corrosion and stays hygienic in service, and because it heats automatically it does not require a boiler on site.

What the half-pipe jacket changes
Compared with the conventional jacketed reactors widely used today, the half-pipe design brings three measurable differences:
- Thinner walls, more capacity for pressure. The shell and lower head walls are 37.5% and 50% thinner respectively than an equivalent jacketed design, and the overall vessel diameter is reduced, saving installation space.
- Better heat transfer. The half-pipe works as the heat source and removes the air-gap resistance found inside ordinary jackets, raising the overall heat transfer coefficient while lowering thermal resistance.
- Lower energy consumption. The ratio of jacket volume to half-pipe volume is 8:1, so far less heating medium is circulating at any moment.
The high flow velocity of the medium inside the coil also keeps scale from building up on the inner jacket surface, and the same vessel can be used for cooling-down processes.

Configuration options
Like the rest of our stainless reactor range, the vessel is composed of the cover, shell, jacket, agitator, shaft-seal drive and supports, and the parts in contact with the material are made from acid-resistant stainless steel plate. Because production processes differ, the following items are designed and manufactured to your requirements:
- Heating medium: electric heating, steam heating or thermal-oil circulation.
- Agitator type: paddle, turbine, push-type, anchor, frame, ribbon and saw-tooth disc designs.
- Shaft sealing: packing seal or mechanical seal.
- Openings: number, size and position of nozzles arranged to your process.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a boiler to run this reactor?
No. The vessel heats automatically and does not require a boiler.
Can one vessel both heat and cool?
Yes. The external coil design is also suitable for cooling-down processes.
Which size matches my batch?
The range covers 500 to 20,000 L nominal capacity with shell diameters from 900 to 2,400 mm. Share your batch volume and process conditions and we will confirm the appropriate size.
What certification backs this equipment?
Our manufacturing plant holds the PRC Special Equipment Manufacturing License for A2 pressure vessels and ASME U Stamp authorization. These are company-level qualifications; the exact scope for your vessel is confirmed at quotation.
